Ruined by an ill-fated financial venture, the young Fraunie tells his fiancée Marian that he cannot marry her. She offers to give him all her savings to help him get back on his feet, but he refuses. She then devises a subtle ruse: she sends him a fake telegram from a lawyer, informing him that he will inherit a large sum of money on the sole condition that he marries her before noon that very day. A frantic chase ensues.
