ARTE Reportage - Gaza: A Reporter under Fire
Description
Mohammed Alaloul, a photographer for the Turkish Anadolu Agency news service, was at work when he learned that his neighborhood had been hit by an Israeli airstrike.
On November 4th, Israel launched an airstrike on the Al Maghazi refugee camp, killing at least 47 people. Dozens were wounded, and there are still a few people missing, presumed to be dead under the rubble, including the family of a journalist. Mohammed Alaloul, a photographer for the Turkish Anadolu Agency news service, was at work when he learned that his neighborhood had been hit by an Israeli airstrike. With reports coming in of multi-story homes being leveled in the area and dead children being brought to a nearby hospital, Alaloul received the devastating news that four of his children, four brothers, and three nephews had been killed in the airstrike. A spokesperson for the Israeli military stated that they were investigating the reports of the strike. And no comments have been made since. "Is it our fault?" "We are innocent people. They were only children here," Alaloul said while digging into the rubble to pull out his children from beneath their destroyed house. Alaloul's wife, Amnah, and their one-year-old son, Adam, were injured but survived the deadly airstrike after they were found a few meters from their house. A few days after losing his family, Mohammed made the decision to return to work in the field and continue documenting the war.
